The Pregnancy & New Mothers Clinic
Motherhood is a turning point in most women's lives. Pregnancy, birth
and the joys of being a new mum are generally a time of great family
celebration. Sometimes, though, pregnancy and childbirth can be a tough
time physically and emotionally for new mothers, introducing a
whole new set of stresses and strains.
Naturopathic osteopathy can help both expectant and new mothers to cope
with a range of these physical stresses. To meet the specific needs of
expectant and new mothers, the BCOM holds a weekly clinic to provide
support, advice and practical assistance.
Most babies actually weigh quite a lot; carrying one during pregnancy
and even after the birth causes extra stresses, strains and postural
changes which can lead to back pain. In pregnancy, hormonal changes may
also disturb water balance and carbohydrate (sugar) metabolism, leaving
an expectant mum feeling both large and sick. The clinic gives dietetic
advice and utilises gentle exercise and osteopathic soft tissue and
mobilisation techniques to restore the body's equilibrium, minimising
both back pain and nausea.
Nursing mothers often have to hold a fixed position while their baby is
breast feeding. This can put stresses into the mid-back, giving a
burning or bruised sensation often punctuated by sharp stabbing pains.
Again, gentle exercises and osteopathic treatment may alleviate this
unwelcome problem.
