Clinical Research

Clinical research is the driving force behind clinical excellence. The British College of Osteopathic Medicine is committed to providing the very best in clinical practice. To achieve this the College has for many years maintained a first-class research laboratory with the very latest iequipment in order to instil a strong clinical research culture within the College and Clinic.

Clinical research projects are carried out by both students and faculty, at undergraduate and postgraduate degree level. The aim of these projects is, in most cases, to add to the weight of evidence underlying osteopathic techniques and principles. We believe it is important to maintain this questioning and investigative approach to ensure that our patients receive the most effective physical treatment, exercise for specific injury, hydrotherapy, dietary advice or other treatment modality.

All our research projects have to receive approval from the ethics committee. From time to time patients may be invited to take part in a research project. This may consist of nothing more than answering a straightforward questionnaire, or possibly taking part in an experimental study, where for example equipment may be used to measure certain effects of treatment, for example range of movement.

Information about these projects will appear on notice boards both within the Clinic reception and also on this website. Patient participation is of course entirely voluntary; however, many patients find these projects an interesting and not unpleasant experience and find some satisfaction is gained by taking part in studies which may directly benefit other patients in the future.
